Sesotec X-Ray for Packaged Food Products

Sesotec RAYCON X-ray inspection systems are designed for reliable foreign-body detection and quality control of packaged food products. They can detect metallic and non-metallic contaminants inside the product and packaging without damaging either, making them particularly suitable for final end-of-line inspection. Sesotec currently offers five main packaged-product families: RAYCON EX1, RAYCON EX2, RAYCON D+, RAYCON D+ TX and RAYCON D+ LW.

Unlike conventional metal detection, X-ray inspection can identify not only metallic contaminants but also foreign bodies such as glass, ceramics, stones, bones, wire and certain rubber or plastic contaminants, provided there is sufficient density contrast with the inspected product. X-ray inspection can also be used with metallized packaging.

RAYCON D+ – Modular X-Ray Inspection System

  • The RAYCON D+ is Sesotec’s flexible modular platform for more demanding packaged-product applications. The current public website presents it simply as RAYCON D+, while the technical brochure distinguishes D+ MX and D+ HXversions. 
  • The MX version focuses on high throughput and flexible quality-control functions, while the HX version uses a higher-resolution detector and more powerful 200 W X-ray source for improved detection performance.

RAYCON D+ MX

  • The D+ MX is the standard D+ configuration. It supports Multi-Lane inspection of up to four identical product lines and Multi-Product operation, allowing up to 20 different products to pass through the system in any sequence while the software automatically applies the correct product parameters.
  • The optional Zone Analyzer allows different areas of an X-ray image to be evaluated independently for counting, weighing and inspection.

RAYCON D+ HX

  • The D+ HX is the high-end configuration with a 0.4 mm detector and 200 W X-ray source. Additional software filters improve detection of challenging low-density contaminants, including Glass Increaser, Bone Detector and Wire Finder. Sensitivity Prediction and advanced compliance functionality are also available.

THiNK X – Artificial Intelligence for X-Ray Inspection

  • Sesotec THiNK X extends conventional grayscale-based X-ray inspection using artificial intelligence. The AI model learns the characteristics of good products and can identify deviations, anomalies and defined objects that may be difficult to distinguish using conventional image-processing methods.
  • THiNK XA – Anomaly Detection learns the normal characteristics of a product and identifies deviations. Applications include improved detection of certain plastic contaminants and enhanced detection of bone and cartilage in fresh meat.

Safe X-Ray Inspection

  • Sesotec designs RAYCON systems with shielding and controlled X-ray dosing for food-production environments. The brochure states that radiation levels remain below applicable limits and that the radiation exposure of inspected products is far below the threshold specified in EU Directive 1999/2/EC.

Hygienic Design

  • RAYCON systems use stainless steel and food-contact-approved plastics, with sloped surfaces, reduced dead spaces and tool-less access to facilitate cleaning and maintenance.

Connectivity and Insight.360

  • Sesotec Insight.360 combines centralized monitoring and data management with Insight.WEB and INTERLINK+. Depending on configuration, systems can be networked through OPC UA or REST API, with operating data, contamination events, product changes, audits and errors recorded for traceability.
